International Museum Day: History

Before we focus on this year’s themes, let’s have a look at Museum Day’s history.

International Museum Day was established in 1977 by the International Council of Museums (ICOM). Every year, the organisation selects and organises a new topic for the day. Globalisation, indigenous peoples, overcoming cultural divides, and environmental preservation are a few of the themes.

Since 1977, all museums worldwide have been asked to take part in this annual event, which raises awareness of the value of museums worldwide by planning fun, free events centred around the theme of the year.

In 2009, 20,000 museums in more than 90 countries participated in the event. The number of participating museums increased to 30,000 across 129 countries in 2012. Since its founding, International Museum Day has grown in popularity. 

Timeline of International Museum Day

Commencement:

ICOM convened the international museum community for a 1951 conference known as Crusade for Museums to address the topic of “Museums and Education” prior to formally establishing International Museum Day. 

Creation: 

At the ICOM General Assembly in Moscow, Russia, a resolution was adopted to create an annual event “with the aim of further unifying the creative aspirations and efforts of museums and drawing the attention of the world public to their activity,” officially establishing International Museum Day in 1977.

Formation of Theme: 

ICOM proposed a theme for the first time in 1992 since the event drew a rising number of museums and supported diversity in unity: Environment and Museums

Widening Communication:

An important turning point for the event was the introduction of institutional partners, a website, and a communications kit for International Museum Day in 2011.

International Museum Day 2026: Theme

Since 1977, International Museum Day has been held annually by ICOM, marking a special occasion for the global museum community.

Raising awareness of the idea that “Museums are an important means of cultural exchange, enrichment of cultures and development of mutual understanding, cooperation and peace among peoples” is the main goal of International Museum Day (IMD). Every year on May 18th, or around that date, International Museum Day is celebrated with a range of events and activities that might take place over one day, a weekend, or a full week. Forty years ago was the first time IMD was celebrated. An increasing number of museums worldwide take part in International Museum Day. Around 158 countries and territories sent over 37,000 museums to take part in the event the previous year.

International Museum Day 2026 will be observed on Monday, May 18, 2026. The official theme is: “Museums Uniting a Divided World.”

The theme for the International Museum Day 2025 is “The Future of Museums in Rapidly Changing Communities“. The 2025 theme underscores the critical role museums play in fostering learning, advancing research, and shaping informed and engaged societies.
