Sir Mokshagundam Visvesvaraya is considered the “Father of Modern India.” He was born on September 15, 1861, in Muddenahalli in Karnataka. After graduating and majoring in civil engineering at the Science College, Pune, he was posted in various government departments.

He is particularly famous for designing the Krishna Raja Sagara Dam at Mysore, one of Asia’s most giant dams when built. This dam helped not only in the irrigation of vast areas but also in the generation of hydroelectric power, enhancing the region’s industrial growth.

Sir M. Visvesvaraya didn’t continue. He also played a significant role in establishing the Bangalore Engineering College, later renamed the Visvesvaraya Technological University in his honour. He facilitated the establishment of the Khadakvasla Dam in Pune and the Mysore Iron and Steel Works at Bhadravathi, counted as one of the first iron and steel plants set up in India.

His work was so impressive that the British Empire granted him the title of “Knight Commander of the Order of the Indian Empire,” otherwise known as KCIE, in 1915. Ten years later, in 1955, he was awarded India’s highest civilian honour, the Bharat Ratna.
