Read and Find Out :
Q. How is Ausable different from other secret agents?
Ans: Ausable is very fat, with an American accent and ever since Fowler had been with him nothing thrilling had happened that one can associate with
a secret agent. Ausable was different from the other agents.
Q. Who is Fowler and what is his first authentic thrill of the day?
Ans: Fowler is a young writer who has been spending time with Ausable, a secret agent in the hope of getting to see some of the expected excitement of an agent’s routine. He is disappointed with not only the looks but also the activities of Ausable. When they are confronted by a pistol toting Max in the room, it is the first authentic thrill for Fowler.
Q. How has Max got in?
Ans: Max got into Ausable’s room using a passkey
Q. How does Ausable say he got in?
Ans: Ausable says that Max got into his room via the balcony which extends from the neighbouring room to under his room’s window.
Think About It :
Q. “Ausable did not fit any description of a secret agent Fowler had ever read.” What do secret agents in books and films look like, in your opinion? Discuss in groups or in class some stories or movies featuring spies, detectives and secret agents, and compare their appearance with that of Ausable in this story. (You may mention characters from fiction in languages other than English. In English fiction you may have come across Sherlock Holmes, Hercule Poirot, or Miss Marple. Have you watched any movies featuring James Bond?)
Ans: Secret agents typically are physically fit, well-versed in many languages, can handle different firearms and are very witty and humorous. In
contrast, Ausable is not fit (he wheezes), is very fat and has a prominent accent. However, like a true agent, he is alert and can handle any danger
equitably.
Q. How does Ausable manage to make Max believe that there is a balcony attached to his room? Look back at his detailed description of it. What makes it a convincing story?
Ans: When Ausable sees Max in his room, demanding the report at gun point, he creates an impression of frustration about anybody entering his room via a balcony under his window. By connecting it to a door visible in the room, he creates an authentic-sounding explanation for the balcony to exist. Max believes the story and tries to use the same balcony for his escape on hearing about the police.
Q. Looking back at the story, when do you think Ausable thought up his plan for getting rid of Max? Do you think he had worked out his plan in detail right from the beginning? Or did he make up a plan taking advantage of events as they happened?
Ans: In true secret agent style, as soon as he was faced with a situation that could be dangerous, Ausable used his wits and came up with a plan to outwit the enemy by taking advantage of events as they happen. He could not have planned all this in advance as he had no information of Max waiting in his room.
Talk About It :
Q. Discuss what you would do in the situations described below. Remember that presence of mind comes out of a state of mental preparedness. If you have thought about possible problems or dangers, and about how to act in such situations, you have a better chance of dealing with such situations if they do arise.
(i) A small fire starts in your kitchen.
Ans: Open all doors and windows, disconnect the gas cylinder and try to take it away from fire source, use sand or water to extinguish fire, call emergency services.
(ii) A child starts to choke on a piece of food.
Ans: Pat the child’s back vigorously, call emergency services, try to physically remove the piece of food, give the child some water.
(iii) An electrical appliance starts to hiss and gives out sparks.
Ans: Switch off all electric appliances, remove fuse from main board, call emergency services.
(iv) A bicycle knocks down a pedestrian.
Ans: Ascertain the injuries, stop the bleeding if any, if there are any broken bones, ensure minimum movement, call ambulance.
(v) It rains continuously for more than twenty-four hours.
Ans: Ensure that the water is not getting collected anywhere, keep all doors and windows closed, avoid driving out.
(vi) A member of your family does not return home at the usual or expected time.
Ans: Try and call him/her on the mobile phone, call the place, where he/she had gone, to know the departure time, follow the possible route he/she may have taken to look for them, call other friends in case of a sudden change of plans, call police.
(vii) You may suggest other such situations.
Ans: Ans. Earthquake, attempted robbery, electricity failure etc.
