    Q. What kind of a person is Mme Loisel — why is she always unhappy?

    Ans: Mme Loisel is unhappy because she believes she is born to enjoy luxuries and a rich life. She cannot stand their poverty and is enamoured by the
    glamour of money.

    Q. What kind of a person is her husband?

    Ans: Her husband is a petty and economical clerk who believes in saving money and not spending it on luxuries. He loved his wife.

    Q. What fresh problem now disturbs Mme Loisel?

    Ans: Mme Loisel is now worried because although, she has a dress to wear to the party, she doesn’t have any appropriate jewel to wear with it.

    Q. How is the problem solved?

    Ans: Her husband advises her to borrow some jewellery from her rich friend and that is how they solve the problem.

    Q. What do M. and Mme Loisel do next?

    Ans: When M. and Mme Loisel realise that they have lost the necklace, M. Loisel goes in search of it. He looks for it at the minister’s house, tells the police, puts an advertisement for a reward but fails to find it.

    Q. How do they replace the necklace?

    Ans: In a shop of the Palais-Royal, they find a chaplet of diamonds which seems to them exactly like the one they had lost. They buy that after taking huge loans and return that instead of the one they took.

    Q. The course of the Loisels’ life changed due to the necklace. Comment.

    Ans: When she wears the necklace at the party, Mme Loisel enjoys the attention she gets. However, on losing it, she and her husband have to buy a replacement for necklace. The necklace costs a lot and they have to borrow a lot of money for it. The next ten years they both have to live a life of
    poverty all because of the necklace they have lost. If she had not borrowed the necklace, they would have lived a better life without the hardships of the poverty.

    Q. What was the cause of Matilda’s ruin? How could she have avoided it?

    Ans: Matilda belonged to a poor family, but she craved for all the riches and luxuries. This greed and craving led to her ruin. She could have avoided it by not giving into her craving for things of superficial beauty like the necklace.

    Q. What would have happened to Matilda if she had confessed to her friend that she had lost her necklace?

    Ans: If Matilda had confessed to her friend that she had lost the necklace, she would have come to know that the necklace was fake and then she need not have worked so hard to repay the loans they took to buy the original necklace.

    Q. If you were caught in a situation like this, how would you have dealt with it?

    Ans: I would have told the truth in the first place itself. Lies never beget any good hence, telling the truth is always the best bet.

    Q. The characters in this story speak in English. Do you think this is their language? What clues are there in the story about the language its characters must be speaking in?

    Ans: Though the characters are speaking in English, the story is set in France. The titles of the lady and her husband, the name of the shop, all suggest that the language they must be using is French.

    Q. Honesty is the best policy.

    Ans: If Matilda had been honest with her friend and had told her that she had lost the necklace, her friend would have told her the real cost of the necklace which Matilda and her husband could have easily repaid. However, Matilda hides the truth, believes that the necklace had real diamonds, buys a replacement for necklace to return to her friend at a very high cost and ruins her life in the bargain. Hence, Honesty is the best policy.

    Q. We should be content with what life gives us.

    Ans: Matilda had a decent life, a house to call her own, some money, a husband who earned a reasonable amount but she craved for all the luxuries and
    riches she saw some people had. She felt she deserved a life full of extravagances. This greed led her to their ruin. Therefore, we should be happy and contented with whatever we have and make the most of it.
