    Q What ‘experiment’ did Maxwell think Camusfearna would be suitable for?

    Ans. Camusfearna was surrounded with water. It would be an ideal place for an otter and so Maxwell thinks of keeping an otter as a pet for an experiment.

    Q Why does he go to Basra? How long does he wait there and why?

    • Ans. Maxwell goes to Basra to collect his mail. But he has to wait there for eight days before his mail arrives. At first, there was no response to his mail, and then the phone lines didn’t work for three days and so he had to wait.

    Ans. When Maxwell took Mijbil to the bathroom, for half an hour he went wild with joy in the water, plunging and rolling in it, shooting up and down the length of the bathtub underwater, and making enough slosh and splash for a hippo. Two days later, Mijbil escaped from the author’s bedroom and entered the bathroom. By the time Maxwell got there, he was up on the end of the bathtub and fumbling at the chromium taps with his paws. In less than a minute, he had turned the tap far enough to produce a trickle of water and after a moment or two achieved the full flow.

    Q . How was Mij to be transported to England?

    Ans. To travel by air to England, Mij had to be packed into a box not more than eighteen inches square and to be carried on the floor at Maxwell’s feet.

    Ans. In the desperation to free himself from the cramped box, Mijbil tore the lining of the box to shreds. In doing so, it wounded itself spattered blood all over.

    Ans. Maxwell was having no other idea to carry Mijbil to London. He felt really bad as the otter had hurt himself and he was worried for him.

    Ans. The air hostess was very understanding and allowed Maxwell to keep the box on his knees. That is why he says that she was the very queen of
    her kind.

    Q. What happened when the box was opened?

    Ans. As soon as the box was opened, Mijbil shot out and ran away towards the passengers where he startled and alarmed many people. However, the air hostess took control of the situation and soon Mijbil was back with Maxwell.

    Q What game had Mij invented?

    Ans. Maxwell had a damaged suitcase, the lid of which was at a slope. Mijbil loved to leave a ball off the high end of the lid and run, ambush, swoop at the ball as it rolled down the lid to the lower end.

    Q What are ‘compulsive habits’? What does Maxwell say are the compulsive habits of (i) school children (ii) Mij ?

    Ans. Things that one feels compelled to do, or cannot resist doing are compulsive habits.
    (i) School children cannot resist trying to place their feet right in the middle of the pavement tiles or touching every seventh railing.
    (ii) Mijbil used to jump on the low wall in front of the primary school and run along the full  length.

    Q What group of animals do otters belong to?

    Ans. Otters belong to a comparatively small group of animals called Mustellines, shared by the badger, mongoose, weasel, stoat, mink and others.

    Q What guesses did the Londoners make about what Mij was?

    Ans. Some of the guesses the Londoners made about what Mijbil was, were a baby seal, a squirrel, a walrus, a hippo, a beaver, a bear cub, a leopard and
    a ‘brontosaur’.
