    Q. You will probably agree that this story does not have a breathless adventure and exciting action. Then what in your opinion makes it interesting ?

Ans. Yes, the story definitely does not have any breathless adventure and exciting action but William Saroyan has given an insight into the workings of young children’s minds. He peeps into the thoughts, desires and longings of children who are grimly aware of their poverty and background and they try to achieve what they want to but eventually have to give it up because of their family’s honour, name and values.

The story is told in a very simple, straightforward and engaging narrative. Such a narrative technique suits the easy-going characters of the narrator and his cousin Mourad. The story starts with the prank of a child named Mourad who is crazy about horses and steals a horse to enjoy riding it.
He also invites his cousin Aram, the narrator to join him. Both justify the stealing by convincing themselves that they have taken it for riding and not selling. Their joy ride continues for days together before it is found out by the owner of the horse. Seeing that the pride and honour of their tribe is at stake, they secretly return the horse to its rightful owner in order to keep the name of their clan and tribe unblemished. The story is definitely interesting by the humorous way the narrator portrays the characters and delineates the idiosyncratic behaviour of his clan as well as the way he captures the thrill and joy of riding a stolen horse.

    Q. Did the boys return the horse because they were conscience-stricken or because they were afraid ?

Ans. The boys were poor and belonged to a poverty stricken tribe. Trust and honesty were the hallmarks of their tribe. They were fond of horse riding, but they had no money to buy a horse to fulfill their cravings.. So, they stole a horse for riding but with no wrong intentions. They had decided to return the horse to its owner after they had learnt riding. They had resolved to do so as they did not want to bring a bad reputation to their tribe. But when they learnt that their honour and prestige was at stake, they returned the horse immediately. The honour of their tribe was very dear to them. They could sacrifice anything to save the honour of their tribe. Undoubtedly, they were proud and honest people.

    Q. “One day back there in the good old days when I was nine and the world was full of every imaginable kind of magnificence and life was still a delightful and mysterious dream….” The story begins in a mood of nostalgia. Can you narrate some incident from your childhood that might make an interesting story ?

    Ans. Do it yourself.
