5. Answer the following questions briefly.
(a) In 1953, Hooper was a favoured young man. Explain.
Ans: Hooper, six-foot-one, had played on the university football team. He was already a hard-charging zone sales manager for a chemical company. His life was going exactly where he wanted it to go and he was doing well. He seemed to be the one favoured by destiny to have all the good in life.
(b) They said that they would create a desk job for Hooper at the headquarters.
(i) Who are ‘they’?
(ii) Why did they decide to do this?
Ans: (i) ‘They’ were the men from Hooper’s company who had asked him to take a year off for recovery.
(ii) They decide to do this to allow Cooper to recuperate and when he got back, he wouldn’t have to do a sales job that needed perfect health.
(c) Duke was an extraordinary dog. What special qualities did he exhibit to justify this? Discuss.
Ans: Duke most certainly was an extraordinary dog. He was the main reason why Chuck was able to walk again. He pushed and pestered his master to start waking. He was very perceptive and knew exactly how much to push his master to walk.
(d) What problems did Chuck present when he returned to the company headquarters?
Ans: When Chuck returned to the company headquarters, there was already a replacement manager in his place. So how to place Hooper back and also let him do a sales job with his limited mobility was the problem that he presented on his return.
(e) Why do you think Charles Hooper’s appointment as Assistant National Sales Manager can be considered to be a tribute to Duke?
Ans: The job of the Assistant National Sales Manager was to take the company step by step towards record sales. Duke had helped Hooper recover step by step and reach his present state. Thus the promotion was a tribute to Duke.
(f) What thoughts do you think might have crossed Chuck’s mind when Marcy quietly went to work and Chuck was alone with his thoughts?
Ans: When Chuck was left alone in the house the whole day, he thought about how he used to be a highly motivated and result-oriented ‘hard-charging’ zone sales manager for the chemical company and these thoughts hindered him from coming to terms with the fact that he was in that condition and maybe he would remain a cripple throughout his life. This depression slowed down his rate of recovery.
(g) ‘Small wins help achieve big goals.’ Support, with evidence from the text, to show how this applies to Chuck.
Ans: One fine evening Chuck’s good hand idly latched the leash onto Duke’s collar and he asked Marcy to help him to his feet. Marcy supported him by the elbow and Chuck took a 'step' by straightening his right leg causing the left foot to drag forward, alongside the right and Duke, tugging steadily, walked to the end of the leash. Four so-called small ‘steps’ they took that day. Over time, leaning back against Duke's pull, Hooper learned to keep his balance without Marcy. Within two weeks, they reached the front porch and by mid-April, the neighbours saw the dog pull his leash but then
stand and wait so that the man would drag himself abreast of the dog and repeat the same. The pair set daily goals and soon Duke began campaigning
for two trips a day. On January 4, Hooper took the biggest 'step' as he walked 200 metres from the clinic to the local branch office of his company.

Writing Task:
Q. Read the diary entry written by Charles Hooper on the day he received the order, “……Charles Hooper is appointed Assistant National Sales Manager.” When a person loses something, he is shocked and gets into a state of denial leading to anger. In such a situation coping well leads to acceptance and a changed way of living in view of the loss. Using Hoopers’ diary entry as a cue, write your views in the form of an article on ‘Coping with Loss’ in about 150 words.
Ans: 12 September, 2015
Chuck Hooper went from destiny’s favoured boy to a paralysed cripple in a matter of few days. He was numb literally and figuratively. He felt he had lost all, but then Duke, his Doberman, literally pushed him to not give up and to cope with the changed scenario in a positive manner. Chuck emerged a winner as he learnt to cope with his loss of mobility. He came back to his workplace more determined than ever and was awarded. However, he suffered another major loss when he lost Duke to an accident. As Duke had taught him to face challenges, this loss did not pull him down but helped him deal with his loss and work harder towards his goals. Chuck Hooper has learnt to cope with his loss and that is the biggest difference between someone who gives up and someone who copes with the loss well. Coping with loss with a positive attitude, however difficult that might be, is the key to dealing with the loss.
