Text Book Questions :-
Think :
- List the things of beauty mentioned in the poem
Ans. Every little or big thing of nature is a thing of beauty and a source of pleasure. The sun, the moon, trees young and old, daffodil flowers are all things of beauty. So are small streams with clear water, mass of ferns and the blooming musk-roses. They are a source of everlasting joy and pleasure. - List the things that cause suffering and pain
Ans. There are several such things that cause suffering and pain. One such thing is when the wicked people out number the good ones. The source of all our sorrows is either ill-health or another human-being. - What does the line, ‘Therefore on every morrow, are we wreathing/A flowery band to bind us to earth’,
suggest to you?
Ans. Man has always shared a special bond with nature. Though the world is a beautiful place to live in, there is a lot of pain and suffering too. That could be enjoyed by treasuring the happiness and joy that beautiful things give us. Keats believed that man and nature were woven into an unbroken bond. He believed that beauty around us is like beautiful flowers and we should wreathe them into a flowery band that keeps us connected to the earth. - What makes human-beings love life in spite of troubles and suffering?
Ans. The poet says that the beautiful things on earth lift the pall off our spirits and make life worth living. Each beautiful thing is like a link that forms a chain or wreath that bound us to the earth. The beautiful things in nature like the moon, the sun, the trees, the ferns and the daffodils bring happiness and reduce human’s sufferings. - Why is ‘grandeur’ associated with the ‘mighty dead’?
Ans. The sad things become a source of beauty and pleasure when they take the status of art. The poet said that the contemplation of the reminiscences of the mighty persons who were dead gives us same pleasure as we experience in contemplating beautiful things of nature. - Do we experience things of beauty only for short moments or do they make a lasting impression on us?
Ans. Keats believed that beautiful things always have a lasting impression on the human minds. All beautiful
objects are a source of joy forever. Beauty survives the trials and tribulations of time and exists continuously in our thoughts. - What image does the poet use to describe the beautiful bounty of the earth?
Ans. The poet uses the image of a perennial fountain which poured forth bounties on earth in the form of an immortal drink from the heaven above. He uses the expression ‘an endless fountain of immortal drink, pouring unto us from the heaven’s brink’. Through these lines the poet described the earth and its beautiful bounties that could not be replaced by anything.
