JEE Advanced Counselling Procedure

JEE Advanced Counselling Procedure

Once the results for JEE Advanced are declared, qualified candidates are required to go through a rigorous counselling process to secure a seat in their desired institute. This section will guide you through the JEE Advanced counselling procedure, eligibility criteria, documents required, and other important details.

The JEE Advanced Counselling process consists of several steps that candidates need to follow. Let’s take a look at each step in detail:

A. Online Registration and Choice Filling

Once the JEE Advanced results are announced, candidates need to register themselves for counselling through the official website. During registration, candidates must provide their personal and academic details. After registration, candidates are required to fill in their preferred choices of courses and institutes based on their rank and availability of seats.

The first step is online registration, where candidates need to visit the official website of JoSAA and complete the registration process by providing their JEE Advanced roll number and other required details. After successful registration, candidates will receive their login credentials.

guideline for josaa registration

The stepwise guideline for JoSAA Registration is discussed below:

  1. Click on “JoSAA 2023 Candidate Registration and Choice Filling” on https://josaa.nic.in/
  2. Log in using your JEE Main/JEE Advanced Application Number and Password.
  3. Go to your profile and check that all the personal details shown are correct.
  4. Click on the Change Password tab and complete this compulsory process.
  5. Click on ‘Submit.’

Choice Filling

Once registered, candidates can proceed with choice filling. They have to select their preferred courses and institutes from the available options. It is advisable to carefully consider various factors such as location, specialisation, and previous year’s cutoff ranks while making the choices.

The choice of filling is free of cost. Here’s how to do it:

  • After registration, you will have to fill in your preferred colleges and specialisation with the available list of colleges and courses.
  • Click on “Choices Available” to view the options the candidate has as per his/her qualification.
  • Next, go to ‘Choice Filling & Locking’, and fill in enough choices to enhance your chances of getting a seat.

Lock Your Seats

After finalising the choices, candidates need to lock them in to confirm their preferences.

To do this, click on “I agree to lock my choices”.

In case of any modification, candidates can click on “I will lock my choices later”.

Take a printout of selected options for further use.

B. Seat Allocation and Mock Allotment

The seat allotment process is conducted based on the candidate’s rank, category, and choices filled during the choice-locking period. The JoSAA uses a computerized algorithm to allocate seats to candidates. The seat allotment results will be published on the official website, and candidates can check their allotment status using their login credentials.

A JoSAA 2023 Mock Allotment is conducted before the actual seat allocation. This helps candidates to know their chances in their desired colleges based on their ranks. After this, candidates can then modify their selected choices of colleges and courses accordingly.

After two mock allocations, the final JoSAA Seat Allotment is released in 6 rounds. The registered candidates are allocated seats based on their performance in the qualifying examination (JEE Main or JEE Advanced) and choices filled during registration.

Candidates can view the seat allotment result by logging into their account using their application number and password.

C. Document Verification and Reporting to Reporting Centres

Candidates have to bring the following set of original documents, wherever applicable, and a set of self-attested photocopies to the reporting centre. After document verification is done, photocopies will be retained by the Reporting Centre and the original documents will be returned.

The candidates can follow the steps mentioned below to check the status of seat allotment during JEE Advanced 2023 Counselling.

  1. Login using the Registration No (User ID), JEE Advanced 2023 Roll No and Password to check their seat allotment status.

Students should check their status of Seat Allotment at the end of every round. Allotments might change due to upgradation. Hence, students should pay attention to this.

Please note: The soft copy of the category (SC/ST/OBC-NCL) certificates uploaded at the time of online registration will be scrutinized against originals during seat allocation

If the certificates uploaded are found to be inappropriate, the student will be treated as General only if their score in the Paper-1 of JEE Main is above the cutoff score for the General category.

Seat Allotment and Reporting to Allotted Institutes

JEE Advanced Seat Allotment

The seat allocation in JEE Advanced 2023 Counselling would be completed within three rounds. Check the status after the completion of every round, as there is a possibility that the seats allotted to them are upgraded because other students have either withdrawn from the course or have accepted seats they prefer.

JoSAA Seat Allotment Process

JoSAA follows a comprehensive seat allotment process that takes into account the candidate’s rank, category, and choices filled. The seat allotment is done in multiple rounds, and candidates have the option to accept or float their allotted seat. Floating allows candidates to participate in subsequent rounds for better seat upgradation.

IIT Seat Matrix

The IITs have a limited number of seats available for each course and category. The seat matrix provides information about the number of seats available in each IIT and course. Candidates can refer to the official JoSAA website to access the IIT seat matrix and make informed choices during the counselling process.

Reporting for JEE Advanced 2023 Seat Allotment

After the seat allotment, candidates need to report to the allotted institute within the specified period. They have to carry all the required documents for verification and complete the admission formalities. Failure to report to the institute on time may result in the cancellation of the allotted seat.

Candidates are required to report to the Zonal IIT after the seats are allotted to them. All the candidates should be present in person for verification of documents and payment of admission fees.

In case the applicants are offered an upgradation, they will have to forfeit the seat allotted to them earlier to accept the upgraded seat.

Important things to note:

  • Candidates need to upload a declaration on acceptance form, after signing it themselves and by their parents.
  • All the applicants should also upload the scanned copy of their mark sheet of 10 + 2.
  • Candidates allotted seats in any of the seven rounds should report to the respective institutes on the specified date and time.

Provisional Admission

The institutes will issue a final allotment letter and grant provisional admission to candidates after verifying the documents and the fee is paid by the candidate.

Be careful and cross-check the documents that are submitted as providing false information/documents will debar you from the counselling process and your admission would be immediately deemed cancelled.

Documents required for provisional admission:

  • JEE Advanced 2023 Original Admit Card
  • JEE Advanced 2023 Seat Allotment Letter from the JOCSAP website
  • JEE Advanced Application Form (duly filled)
  • Duly filled medical examination report
  • Birth proof
  • Class 12th or equivalent examination mark sheet and passing certificate
  • Category certificate (OBC (NCL)/SC/ST/PwD/DS) issued by competent authority as per the format in the JEE Advanced 2023 Brochure

Criteria for foreign national students —

  • Attested photocopy of the page in the passport comprising the name, photo and nationality.
  • DD towards the registration fee. It would be later adjusted towards the tuition fee, to be paid at the time of admission.

Seat Upgradation and Withdrawal

If you’re wondering what is seat upgradation then it is the process where a seat is allotted through upgradation in the second round of JOSAA counselling.

This happens when the earlier allotted seat is cancelled and so it is allotted to another eligible candidate as per merit.

The introduction of the seat withdrawal option by the JoSAA officials will be significant in the reduction of the number of unfilled seats at IITs, NITs, IIITs and GFTIs.

Candidates can withdraw their seats anytime during the rounds.

Students are advised to check their seat allotment status after every round. Upgradation of seat allotment is possible if some candidates withdraw their applications.

Diligently check the allotment status after every round.

Guidelines for upgrading their allocated seats or withdrawing from the counselling process

JEE Advanced Counselling provides candidates with an opportunity to upgrade their allocated seats or withdraw from the counselling process under certain circumstances.

Here are the guidelines for candidates who wish to upgrade their allocated seats or withdraw from the counselling process:

Seat Upgradation Guidelines

  1. Floating Option: Candidates who have been allocated a seat in a particular round of counselling have the option to “float” their seat. Floating allows candidates to participate in subsequent rounds of counselling to get a better seat. If a candidate chooses to float, their allocated seat will be retained until they accept a seat in a subsequent round or freeze their seat in the current round.
  1. Better Seat Allotment: During subsequent rounds of counselling, candidates may be allotted a seat that is higher in their preference list. In such cases, they have the option to accept the better seat and upgrade their allocation.
  1. Seat Freezing: If a candidate is satisfied with their allocated seat and does not wish to participate in further rounds, they can choose to “freeze” their seat. Freezing ensures that the allocated seat is confirmed and the candidate is no longer considered for seat upgradation in subsequent rounds.

Withdrawal Guidelines

  1. Withdrawal Option: Candidates who have been allocated a seat but no longer wish to participate in the counselling process can choose to withdraw. By withdrawing, the candidate forfeits their allocated seat and becomes ineligible for further rounds of counselling.
  1. Withdrawal Deadline: There is a specific deadline within which candidates must exercise the withdrawal option. It is important to check the counselling schedule and adhere to the specified deadline to ensure a smooth withdrawal process.
  1. Seat Surrender: Candidates who choose to withdraw must surrender their allocated seat by following the prescribed procedure. This allows the seat to become available for other candidates in subsequent rounds.
  1. Refund of Counselling Fee: In most cases, the counselling fee paid by the candidate during the registration process is non-refundable, regardless of whether they withdraw or upgrade their seat. Candidates should carefully consider this before making a decision.
  1. Future Participation: Candidates who withdraw from the counselling process lose their eligibility for further participation. They will not be considered for seat allocation in subsequent rounds.

Candidates must carefully evaluate their options and consider their priorities before deciding on seat upgradation or withdrawal in JEE Advanced Counselling. Staying informed about the counselling schedule, important dates, and guidelines provided by the authorities will help candidates make an informed choice that aligns with their preferences and aspirations.

JEE Advanced Tiebreaker Policy

If two or more candidates have similar marks/ranks n terms of their aggregate marks, then the following tie-resolving policy shall be used:

  • The one with higher positive ranks will be given a higher rank.
  • The one with greater marks in mathematics will be given a higher rank.
  • The one with greater marks in Physics will be given a higher rank.

If the tie situation still continues, then it will be resolved by assigning the same ranks to the candidates.

Counselling Support and Resources

JEE Advanced Counselling can be a complex and overwhelming process for candidates. However, there are various support systems and resources available to assist candidates in navigating through the counselling process.

Here are some valuable counselling support and resources for JEE Advanced aspirants:

  1. Official Websites: The official websites of JEE Advanced and the Joint Seat Allocation Authority (JoSAA) are the primary sources of information regarding counselling. Candidates should regularly visit these websites for updates, notifications, and guidelines related to counselling.
